We believe in a portfolio approach
No single energy source is the answer to the world’s energy needs. A portfolio approach that integrates traditional and alternative energy sources with technology and innovation that improve efficiency and conservation will meet 21st-century energy demands.
Our energy industry is powerful
Our energy sector contributes more than $13.7 billion to the regional gross domestic product, supports - directly or indirectly - 105,000 jobs and accounts for 10% of the regional economy. We’re home to more than 700 firms in the global energy supply chain. More than $1 billion in corporate and government innovation spending flows through Greater Pittsburgh each year.
Innovation is our strength and our history
We’re home to a wealth of brainpower and R&D capacity that sets us apart. For over 100 years, Greater Pittsburgh has been the birthplace of energy innovation from U.S. DOE National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), the only federal government laboratory devoted to fossil energy research, to Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, to Carnegie Mellon University, Penn State, the University of Pittsburgh and West Virginia University research labs.
